Microsoft Passkeys: Passwordless Sign-in for All Microsoft Accounts

Microsoft has announced the widespread availability of Passkeys, a passwordless sign-in method that utilizes biometric authentication for secure and convenient access to Microsoft accounts across Windows, Android, and iOS devices.

Introduced in Windows 11 last year, Passkeys eliminate the need for traditional passwords, allowing users to sign in using their device’s biometric authentication system, such as facial recognition, fingerprint, or PIN. This enhanced security measure safeguards user accounts against phishing attempts and password breaches.

The implementation of Passkeys marks a significant step towards Microsoft’s vision of a passwordless future. In 2015, the company introduced Windows Hello, an authentication system that enables users to log in to their PCs using facial recognition, fingerprint, or PIN.

Passkeys have gained widespread industry adoption, with support from major tech companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft. Over 400 million Google accounts have already adopted Passkeys, demonstrating a growing shift towards passwordless authentication among users.
