Improved Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 Unveiled

Qualcomm has officially unveiled the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 mid-range processor. This chip, which is an improved version of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, has a Cortex-X4 prime core in the CPU unit and its AI capabilities are on par with the flagship Snapdragon 8 series processors.

In a statement sent to Anandtech, Qualcomm says that the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 is 15% and 45% more powerful than its predecessor in the CPU and GPU units, respectively, and consumes 5% less power.

Technical Specifications of Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 Processor

The Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 is the first Snapdragon 7 series chip with local AI support. This means that various AI capabilities do not require cloud servers and are processed on the device. Qualcomm’s new processor supports a large number of large language models (LLMs) and large visual models (LVMs) such as Baichuan-7B, Llama 2, Gemini Nano and Zhipu ChatGLM.

Thanks to AI capabilities, smartphones equipped with Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 will have a smarter virtual assistant and can be used to create a variety of content. Two exciting features are translation between multiple languages and the ability to convert audio files to text.

Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 Processor in Hand

The Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 is a 4nm processor and the frequency of the Cortex-X4 prime core reaches 2.8 GHz. The CPU unit of this chip is also equipped with four middle cores (probably Cortex-A720) with a frequency of 2.6 GHz and three low-power Cortex-A520 cores with a frequency of 1.9 GHz.

The modem used in Qualcomm’s new system-on-a-chip is called X63 5G, which supports the FastConnect 7800 platform and is equipped with the 3GPP Release 17 5G specification. Download speed via 5G NR network reaches 4.2 gigabits per second.

Display and Memory

Smartphones equipped with Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 can at best have a 4K display with a 60Hz refresh rate or a +QHD display with a 120Hz refresh rate. This chip supports refresh rates from 1 to 240 Hz (apparently 240 Hz refresh rate is offered on lower resolution displays). The Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 is equipped with up to 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and high-speed UFS 4.0 storage.

Upcoming Smartphones

According to Qualcomm, unspecified models of OnePlus, Realme and Sharp phones will soon be introduced with Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3. It is unclear how the production cost and price of Qualcomm’s new processor will affect the price of mid-range smartphones.
