Epic Games Set to Disrupt Mobile App Market with New Storefront

Epic Games has officially confirmed that it will be bringing its online store to iOS and Android, with a conceptual image released.

Epic Games, one of Apple’s biggest critics, has officially confirmed that it will be bringing its new online store to the iPhone, in addition to the Android operating system. The store, called the Epic Games Store, will be a competitor to the App Store and Google Play.

Epic Games posted on the social network X, saying: “We are coming to iOS and Android.” According to the company led by Tim Sweeney, the Epic Games Store will be a “true multi-platform store.” Currently, the Windows version of the Epic Games Store operates as a competitor to Steam, making games available for personal computers.

Part of Epic Games’ new post says that the company wants to make the mobile version of its store available to all developers “with the same fair rules.”

Epic Games says it is bringing the same revenue sharing model from the Windows version to the Android version. This means that developers can keep 88% of the revenue from in-app purchases, while Epic Games takes a 12% cut.

Epic Games’ commission is much lower than Google Play and the App Store, which charge developers 15-30% commission. Google said in 2021 that developers will be required to pay a 15% commission until they earn $1 million in revenue.

It is not yet clear which games will make their way to the Android operating system through the Epic Games Store, but Fortnite will undoubtedly be one of them.

Epic Games has released an image of its mobile store, which you can see on the cover of this article; however, the company has said that the image in question is a “conceptual model” and the final version may have some visual differences.

Epic Games says its new store will be available by the end of 2024.

Here are some additional details about the Epic Games Store for iOS and Android:

  • The store will be available on both the App Store and Google Play.
  • Developers will be able to keep 88% of the revenue from in-app purchases.
  • The store will feature a variety of games, including Fortnite.
  • The store is expected to launch by the end of 2024.

The launch of the Epic Games Store for iOS and Android is a significant development in the gaming industry. It could potentially lead to lower prices for consumers and more competition for developers.
