Details of Fixed Vulnerabilities in Chrome 123 Update Revealed

Google Chrome developers have fixed several critical security bugs in version 123 of the browser.

Google released a new update for Chrome for Mac and Windows that fixes 12 vulnerabilities on the browser. None of the 12 bugs have been exploited for hacking attacks so far.

Srinivas Sista, in a post on the Chrome blog, pointed out that seven of the 12 vulnerabilities fixed in version 123 were identified and reported to the company by security researchers outside of Google.

The internet search giant has classified one of the bugs, identified as CVE-2024-2625, as a critical vulnerability. One or two of the fixed bugs allowed for code injection and execution. Google paid a total of $22,000 in rewards to the discoverers of Chrome security vulnerabilities.

Chrome 123 does not offer any new features. The browser usually installs new versions automatically. You can manually update the browser by going to Help > About Chrome. Google has also released the new Chrome update for Android and iPhone.

Developers of Chromium-based browsers should also now apply the new updates quickly. None of these Chromium browsers have been updated so far; Microsoft Edge, Vivaldi and Brave use the security update before Chrome 123, and Opera is one version behind.

Here are some of the details of the fixed vulnerabilities:

  • CVE-2024-2625: High severity object lifecycle issue in V8.
  • CVE-2024-2626: Medium severity out of bounds read in Swiftshader.
