Bill Gates: The Unofficial Microsoft Advisor

Despite his official departure from Microsoft, Bill Gates still plays a significant role in the company’s decision-making process.

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, stepped down from the board of directors on March 14, 2020, to focus more on his philanthropic endeavors. However, a new report suggests that Gates remains involved in the company’s affairs and is a driving force behind Microsoft’s artificial intelligence (AI) efforts.

Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, is said to have maintained a close relationship with Gates after his retirement and has asked Gates to dedicate 30% of his time to serving as a technical advisor to Microsoft.

“Satya Nadella and all of the senior leadership rely heavily on Gates,” said a Microsoft executive. “Every time we make a big change, we ask for his input. The Microsoft CEO is heavily reliant on Bill Gates for technical advice.”

In 2016, Gates held meetings with Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and challenged him to develop a large language model (LLM) capable of passing an advanced biology exam. Five years later, Altman showed Gates a version of GPT-4 that had successfully passed the exam.

Gates is also actively involved in recruiting top executives to Microsoft and is consulted whenever the company makes a major change. Therefore, despite Bill Gates’s official retirement from Microsoft, he remains a pivotal figure in shaping the company’s strategic direction.
