AI “Gemini Nano” to Arrive on Pixel 8

In a statement sent to The Verge, Google said that the Pixel 8 will use Gemini Nano for several AI-based features with the next major update.

Google introduced Gemini Nano in December as a large language model optimized for mobile, saying that it will be a core part of Android in the future. At the time, it was said that only the Pixel 8 Pro would be able to support local AI among Google’s phones, but now that feature is set to come to the Pixel 8 as well.

The Pixel 8 will be able to use Gemini Nano in developer preview mode with the next update. Like the Pixel 8 Pro, it will process summaries of recorded files with local AI.

Galaxy AI powered by Google’s language model is released for more Samsung phones today.

Samsung says that its AI is processed both in the cloud and locally.

Additional details:

  • The Pixel 8 will get the Summarize feature in Recorder, which can generate bullet points based on an audio recording’s transcript.
  • The Pixel 8 will also get Gboard Smart Reply, which Google says allows for higher-quality smart replies that include conversational awareness.
  • Gemini Nano is coming to the Pixel 8 in the next Pixel Feature Drop, which is expected to arrive in June.
  • Gemini Nano will only be available to Pixel 8 users with Android developer accounts in the developer preview.
  • Galaxy AI is available on the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 4, and Galaxy Z Flip 5.
